“I am inspired to search body language and proximity through the strange beauty of pattern and form that reminds us of both faraway lands and home. Through literary nods to biblical, mythical, and personal story, I see the portrait as an intimate connection of our experience, one to the other.”

My Work

  • Paintings

Painting allows the fluidity to delineate form and air, providing a rich surface from which to observe life. It is within that context of nurturing that these works are created. Many of my figures are robed as a symbol of protection, to cover or offer, much as the carpets and curtains and quilts of our spaces remind us of home. Others find their way into gardens, surrounded by the green of growth, using pattern, color and space as complex and ritualized symbol.

  • Pastels

The soft rich color of pastels lends itself to the vibrancy of life when portraying family, friends, and community. I use Nupastels and Rembrants as a base, adding softer Unison, Sennelier, and Schmincke as the piece resolves towards a painting.

  • Drawings

Many of my drawings include collage, some are built from the powdery softness of chalks, others, the crisp clarity of graphite, and others yet, include the watery base of an acrylic wash. Materials and gesture support the seen and unseen worlds that drive my content.
